St. Paraskeva of Iasi

October 1411th century

Feast day: October 14, and October 27 on the Old Calendar.

St. Paraskeva the New was born in the eleventh century in Epivates on the Sea of Marmara, near Constantinople, and from childhood gave herself to prayer, almsgiving, and asceticism, spending years as a hermitess in the wilderness beyond the Jordan.

Commanded by an angel to return home, she reposed in Epivates at about the age of twenty-seven, and her incorrupt relics were later found working healings and fragrant with grace. After passing through Tarnovo, Belgrade, and Constantinople, her relics were brought in 1641 to Iasi, where they rest today in the Metropolitan Cathedral, making her the beloved patroness of Moldavia and one of the most venerated saints of Romania. She is distinct from the earlier St. Paraskevi of Rome, the second-century virgin martyr.
