St. Ephrem the Syrian
St. Ephrem the Syrian (306-373 AD) was a deacon, poet, and theologian. Known as the 'Harp of the Holy Spirit,' his hymns and biblical commentaries profoundly influenced Eastern Christianity.
His prayer of repentance is recited throughout Great Lent in the Orthodox Church.
Virtues are formed by prayer. Prayer preserves temperance. Prayer suppresses anger. Prayer prevents emotions of pride and envy.
Blessed the one who continually humbles himself willingly; he will be crowned by the One who willingly humbled himself for our sake.
Glory be to You, Who laid Your cross as a bridge over death, that souls might pass over upon it from the dwelling of the dead to the dwelling of life!
Prayer of St. Ephrem
O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, despair, lust of power, and idle talk. But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to Thy servant. Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own transgressions, and not to judge my brother, for blessed art Thou, unto ages of ages. Amen.
