St. Maximus the Confessor
January 217th century
St. Maximus the Confessor (580-662 AD) was a monk and theologian. He defended the doctrine of Christ's two wills (divine and human) against Monothelitism.
His theological and spiritual writings on deification and the spiritual life are central to Orthodox theology. He died in exile after being tortured for his faith.
Food is not evil, but gluttony is. Childbearing is not evil, but fornication is. Money is not evil, but avarice is. Glory is not evil, but vainglory is.
The one who loves God cannot help but love every man as himself.
Nothing in human affairs is more contrary to nature than the distinction between rich and poor.
Prayer of St. Maximus
Lord God, you crown the merits of the saints and pardon sinners when they repent. Forgive us our sins, now that we come before you, humbly confessing our guilt.
