St. Panteleimon the Healer

July 273rd-4th century

Feast day: July 27, and August 9 on the Old Calendar.

St. Panteleimon was born in Nicomedia to the pagan Eustorgius and the Christian Euboula, and studied medicine under the famed physician Euphrosynus.

Instructed in the faith and baptized by the priest Hermolaus, he treated the sick, the imprisoned, and the poor without charge, healing them in the name of Jesus Christ. Denounced by envious physicians, he confessed Christ before Emperor Maximian, healed a paralytic in his presence, and after enduring many tortures was beheaded around the year 305. He is venerated as a great-martyr and the foremost of the unmercenary physicians, whose name means "all-merciful."
