St. Paraskevi of Rome

July 262nd century

Feast day: July 26, and August 8 on the Old Calendar.

St. Paraskevi was born near Rome to the pious Christians Agathon and Politia, who named her for the day of her birth, Friday, the day of the Lord's Passion.

After her parents died she gave away her inheritance, embraced virginity, and boldly preached Christ to the pagans, converting many. Arrested under Emperor Antoninus Pius, she endured a red-hot helmet and a cauldron of boiling oil and pitch unharmed, and healed the emperor when he was blinded, which is why she is invoked for ailments of the eyes. She was later beheaded under the governor Tarasius around the year 140, and countless healings have flowed from her intercessions since.
