St. Paul the Apostle

June 291st century

Feast day: June 29, and July 12 on the Old Calendar.

Born Saul in Tarsus of Cilicia, a Pharisee of the tribe of Benjamin educated under Gamaliel, he zealously persecuted the early Church until the risen Christ appeared to him on the road to Damascus, after which he was baptized and became the great Apostle to the Gentiles.

Over three missionary journeys he planted churches across Asia Minor, Greece, and beyond, and his fourteen epistles form a foundational part of the New Testament. As a Roman citizen he was beheaded in Rome under Nero, around 67 AD, and the Church commemorates him together with St. Peter on June 29.
