St. Peter the Apostle

June 291st century

Feast day: June 29, and July 12 on the Old Calendar.

Simon, a fisherman from Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee and brother of St. Andrew the First-Called, was named Peter (the Rock) by Christ after confessing Him as the Son of the living God.

Chief among the Twelve Apostles, he witnessed the Transfiguration, preached the first sermon at Pentecost, opened the Church to the Gentiles by baptizing Cornelius, and wrote two epistles of the New Testament. Though he denied Christ three times during the Passion, his bitter repentance and restoration by the risen Lord made him a model of contrition and renewed zeal. He was martyred in Rome under Nero around the year 67, crucified upside down at his own request, deeming himself unworthy to die in the same manner as his Lord.
