St. Photini the Samaritan Woman
St. Photini is the Samaritan woman whom Christ met at Jacob's Well, where He revealed Himself to her as the Messiah and offered her the living water (John 4).
After Pentecost she was baptized by the apostles with the name Photini, "the enlightened one," and preached the Gospel far and wide with her five sisters and two sons, laboring in Carthage and finally in Rome. There, under the emperor Nero (ca. 66), she endured cruel tortures and was cast into a well, receiving the crown of martyrdom. The Church honors her as a Great Martyr and Equal-to-the-Apostles, commemorating her on February 26 and on the Sunday of the Samaritan Woman after Pascha.
Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.
Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.
I know that Messiah is coming, who is called Christ. When He comes, He will tell us all things.
Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?
Troparion · Tone 3
Illumined by the Holy Spirit, and refreshed by the streams of Christ the Savior, O all-praised one, you drank the water of salvation and gave it abundantly to those who thirsted. O Great Martyr and Equal of the Apostles Photini, entreat Christ God that our souls may be saved.
Kontakion · Tone 3
Photini the glorious, the crown and glory of Martyrs, has this day ascended to the shining mansions of Heaven, and she calls all together to sing her praises, that they might be recompensed with her hallowed graces.
