St. Polycarp of Smyrna
February 231st-2nd century
St. Polycarp of Smyrna (69-155 AD) was Bishop of Smyrna and a direct disciple of St. John the Apostle. He was a living link between the apostolic age and the following generations.
His martyrdom at age 86 is one of the earliest recorded, showing remarkable courage and faith in the face of death.
Eighty-six years I have served Him, and He has done me no wrong. How can I blaspheme my King who saved me?
Stand fast in the faith, and love one another.
Prayer of St. Polycarp at Martyrdom
Lord God Almighty, Father of Your beloved and blessed Son Jesus Christ, I bless You for having made me worthy of this day and hour, that I may share the cup of Christ among the number of Your martyrs.
