St. Barbara
December 43rd century
St. Barbara was a virgin martyr of the 3rd century. According to tradition, she was imprisoned in a tower by her pagan father.
She secretly became a Christian and ordered three windows in her tower to represent the Holy Trinity. She is invoked against lightning and explosions, and is the patron saint of artillerymen and miners.
My father, I pray you that ye will not constrain me to marry, for thereto I have no will ne nor thought.
Jesus Christ, that knowest the hearts of men, and knowest my thought, I beseech thee to leave me not.
Lord God, that coverest heaven with clouds, I pray thee to cover my body, to the end that it be not seen of the evil people.
Prayer to St. Barbara
O holy Great Martyr Barbara, stand with us in our hour of need. Be our protection against sudden and unprovided death. May we receive the Holy Mysteries before our departure from this life.
