St. Elijah the Prophet

July 209th century BC

Feast day: July 20, and August 2 on the Old Calendar.

The Prophet Elijah the Tishbite lived in the Kingdom of Israel in the 9th century before Christ, during the reign of King Ahab.

Zealous for the true God, he shut the heavens for three and a half years of drought, was fed by ravens and by the widow of Zarephath whose son he raised from the dead, and called down fire from heaven on Mount Carmel to confound the prophets of Baal. He was taken up alive into heaven in a fiery chariot, and he appeared with Moses beside Christ at the Transfiguration. The Church honors him as the greatest of the prophets and a forerunner of the Second Coming of Christ.
