Icon of St. Matrona of Moscow

St. Matrona of Moscow

May 219th-20th century

Feast day: May 2, on the New and Old Calendar.

Blessed Matrona was born in 1881 in the village of Sebino in Tula province, blind from birth and paralyzed from the age of seventeen, yet endowed by God with the gifts of clairvoyance, prayer, and healing.

In 1925 she moved to Moscow, where for decades, homeless and hunted during the Soviet persecutions, she received as many as forty visitors a day, counseling, consoling, and healing them. She reposed on May 2, 1952, foretelling that crowds would one day come to her grave, and she was glorified by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1999 for local veneration in the Moscow diocese, and in 2004 for churchwide veneration; her relics now rest at the Protection (Pokrov) Convent in Moscow, one of Russia's most visited shrines.
