Icon of St. Moses the God-seer

St. Moses the God-seer

September 416th century BC

Feast day: September 4, and September 17 on the Old Calendar.

The Holy Prophet Moses, of the tribe of Levi, was rescued from the Nile as an infant and raised in Pharaoh's court before God called him at the Burning Bush to lead Israel out of slavery in Egypt.

He parted the Red Sea, received the tablets of the Law on Mount Sinai, and was granted to behold the glory of God, for which the Church calls him the God-seer. After guiding his people through forty years in the wilderness, he died at the age of 120 on Mount Nebo within sight of the Promised Land, and he later appeared in glory beside the Prophet Elias at the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor. He is honored as the author of the Pentateuch and is distinct from the desert father St. Moses the Black.
