St. Theodore Stratelates
St. Theodore, called Stratelates ("the General"), came from Euchaita in Asia Minor and for his bravery was appointed military commander of Heraclea, where he joined his service with preaching the Gospel until nearly the whole city had embraced Christ.
When the emperor Licinius demanded that he sacrifice to the pagan gods, Theodore instead smashed the gold and silver idols and gave the pieces to the poor, for which he endured savage tortures, crucifixion, and finally beheading on February 8, 319. His sufferings were recorded by his servant Varus, and he is honored as a patron of soldiers; his relics were later translated to his native Euchaita.
Glory to Thee, my God, glory to Thee!
Beloved, halt! My Lord Jesus Christ, hanging upon the Cross, restrained the angels and did not permit them to take revenge on the race of man.
Do not fail to record the day of my death, and bury my body in Euchaita.
