St. Tikhon of Moscow
Born Vasily Belavin in 1865 in the Pskov region of Russia, St. Tikhon served as missionary bishop and archbishop in North America from 1898 to 1907, organizing the American diocese and founding St. Tikhon's Monastery in Pennsylvania.
In November 1917, as revolution engulfed Russia, he was elected Patriarch of Moscow, the first in over two centuries. He fearlessly rebuked the Bolsheviks' violence, endured arrest and imprisonment, and bore the Church's suffering as a true confessor until his repose on April 7, 1925; he was glorified in 1989.
May God teach every one of us to strive for His truth, and for the good of the Holy Church, rather than something for our own sake.
Devote all your energy to preaching the word of God and the truth of Christ, especially today, when unbelief and atheism are audaciously attacking the Church of Christ.
Think what you are doing, you madmen! Stop your bloody reprisals. Your acts are not merely cruel, they are the works of Satan, for which you will burn in hell fire in the life hereafter and be cursed by future generations in this life.
The establishment of any particular form of government is not the work of the Church, but of the people themselves.
Let my name perish in history, if only the Church may benefit.
Troparion · Tone 1
Let us praise Tikhon, the patriarch of all Russia, and enlightener of North America, an ardent follower of the Apostolic traditions, and good pastor of the Church of Christ, who was elected by divine providence, and laid down his life for his sheep. Let us sing to him with faith and hope, and ask for his hierarchical intercessions: Keep the Church in Russia in tranquility, and the Church in North America in peace. Gather her scattered children into one flock, bring to repentance those who have renounced the True Faith, preserve our lands from civil strife, and entreat God's peace for all people!
