St. Cyril of Alexandria
June 95th century
St. Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD) was Patriarch of Alexandria when the city was at its height of influence. He is chiefly known for his defense of Orthodox Christology against Nestorianism at the Council of Ephesus (431), where Mary was proclaimed Theotokos (God-bearer).
That anyone could doubt the right of the holy Virgin to be called the Mother of God fills me with astonishment.
The Word Himself, coming into the Blessed Virgin herself, assumed for Himself His own temple from her holy flesh.
As two pieces of wax fused together make one, so he who receives Holy Communion is so united with Christ that Christ is in him and he is in Christ.
Prayer to the Theotokos
Hail, O Mother of God, Mary, thou treasure-house of the whole universe, thou ever-burning lamp, crown of virginity, scepter of orthodoxy, imperishable temple.
