St. Macarius of Egypt
January 194th century
St. Macarius of Egypt (300-391 AD) was a Desert Father and hermit. Known as 'the Great' and 'the Elder,' he founded a monastic community in the Scetes desert.
His spiritual homilies on prayer and the spiritual life have been treasured throughout Orthodox history.
The heart itself is but a small vessel, yet dragons are there, and there are also lions; there are poisonous beasts and all the treasures of evil.
There is no other perfect virtue than that the soul should consider itself as nothing.
Prayer of St. Macarius
O God, cleanse me a sinner, for I have never done anything good in Thy sight; deliver me from the evil one, and may Thy will be in me.
