St. Anthony the Great
January 173rd-4th century
St. Anthony the Great (251-356 AD) is considered the Father of All Monks. After hearing the Gospel message to sell all and follow Christ, he retreated to the Egyptian desert where he lived as a hermit for decades.
His life, written by St. Athanasius, inspired countless others to pursue monastic life.
Not to think much of the present, but rather to remember the judgment that is coming, and to know that Christ alone was the true and Eternal King.
Do not trust in your own righteousness, do not worry about the past, but control your tongue and your stomach.
Our life and our death is with our neighbor. If we gain our brother, we have gained God, but if we scandalize our brother, we have sinned against Christ.
We need not fear their suggestions, for by prayer, fasting, and faith in the Lord their attack immediately fails.
Sign yourselves therefore with the cross, and depart boldly, and let these make sport for themselves.
The Scriptures are enough for instruction, but it is a good thing to encourage one another in the faith, and to stir up with words.
Tell me what you do, how you pass your day. God knows; He weighs and judges things differently.
Prayer of St. Anthony
Lord, I believe that You are present in this Holy Sacrament of the altar. I love You above all things and I passionately desire to receive You into my soul.
