The Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel
The Archangels Michael and Gabriel are the chief captains of the heavenly Bodiless Powers, honored together with all the angelic hosts on November 8, the Synaxis established at the beginning of the fourth century.
Michael, whose name means "Who is like God?", cast down Lucifer and the fallen spirits and stands as Chief Commander of the armies of heaven, defender of the people of God. Gabriel, whose name means "God is my strength", is the great messenger of the mysteries of salvation: he interpreted visions for the Prophet Daniel, foretold the birth of the Forerunner to Zacharias, and announced to the Virgin Mary the Incarnation of the Son of God.
The Lord rebuke you!
I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings.
Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!
Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.
For with God nothing will be impossible.
Troparion of the Bodiless Powers
Commanders of the heavenly hosts, we who are unworthy beseech you, by your prayers encompass us beneath the wings of your immaterial glory, and faithfully preserve us who fall down and cry to you: deliver us from all harm, for you are the commanders of the powers on high!
Kontakion of the Bodiless Powers
Commanders of God's armies and ministers of the divine glory, princes of the bodiless angels and guides of mankind, ask for what is good for us, and for great mercy, supreme commanders of the Bodiless Hosts.
