St. Cosmas and St. Damian

November 13rd century

Feast day: November 1, and November 14 on the Old Calendar.

Sts. Cosmas and Damian were brothers born in Asia Minor in the 3rd century to a pagan father and a devout Christian mother, St. Theodota, who raised them in the faith after their father's death.

Trained as physicians, they received from the Holy Spirit the gift of healing sicknesses of soul and body, and in obedience to Christ's command, "Freely you have received, freely give," they never accepted payment, earning the title Anargyroi, the Unmercenaries. They reposed in peace and were buried together at Thereman in Mesopotamia, where their relics became a source of many miracles, and they are venerated as the foremost of the Church's unmercenary physicians.
