St. Nectarios of Aegina
Born Anastasios Kephalas in Selymbria, Thrace, in 1846, St. Nectarios was consecrated Metropolitan of Pentapolis in Egypt in 1889, but was soon driven from his post by the slander of envious clergy.
Returning to Greece, he served humbly as a preacher and as director of the Rizarios Ecclesiastical School in Athens, and in 1904 founded the Holy Trinity Convent on the island of Aegina, where he reposed in 1920. Innumerable miracles of healing at his relics made him one of the most beloved wonderworkers of modern Orthodoxy, and he was glorified as a saint in 1961.
Happiness is a pure heart, for such a heart becomes the throne of God.
Those who seek happiness outside themselves, in riches and glory, in pleasures and in all the vanities whose end is bitterness, err greatly. Erecting a tower of happiness outside our own hearts is like building a house in a place that is shaken by constant earthquakes.
Purify your heart of all defilement and preserve it in purity, so that the Lord may come down and abide in you.
Entrust the Lord with all your cares: He provides for you. Do not be fainthearted and do not fret.
Hope in God never leads to despair.
Troparion
The offspring of Selyvria and the guardian of Aegina, the true friend of virtue who didst appear in the last years, O Nektarios, we faithful honor thee as a godly servant of Christ; for thou pourest forth healings of every kind for those who piously cry out: Glory to Christ Who hath glorified thee; glory to Him Who hath made thee wondrous; glory to Him Who worketh healings for all through thee.
O Virgin Pure (Agni Parthene), composed by St. Nectarios
O Virgin pure, immaculate, O Lady Theotokos, O Virgin Mother, Queen of all, and fleece which is all dewy; more radiant than the rays of sun, and higher than the heavens; delight of virgin choruses, superior to angels; much brighter than the firmament, and purer than the sun's light; more holy than the multitude of all the heavenly armies: Rejoice, O unwedded Bride!
